Centrum Architects were engaged following a public tender process to undertake the design and documentation for a proposed redevelopment of an existing indoor sports centre.
The project involves the refurbishment and extension of the centre including: façade upgrade, roof replacement, sports floor replacement, a new 1200 seat retractable seating bank for a show court, new storage facilities, amenities, elite-level change rooms, multi-purpose teaching/training and events room for the basketball association.
The façade upgrade needed to deliver ‘bang for the buck’ rather than ‘reinvent the wheel’. The design approach focused on re-painting serviceable fabric, replacing degraded polycarbonate and fibreglass and marrying-in the existing fabric with the new extensions. The design for the new extensions sought to take inspiration for the city’s leisure branding and communications design with its sweeping arcs and blue colouring.
