Starting with a blank canvas on a greenfield 12 Ha site in the Macedon Ranges, Centrum were selected to design a forever home for a couple about to retire and put down roots from a career of overseas postings. Centrum reviewed the entire site and evaluated the pros and cons of possible locations for the home, taking into account various factors such as views, wind exposure, bushfire risk and natural features such as dams, trees, gullies and rocks. The recommended site made the most of distant city views, views over the dam to the bush on the hill, whilst reducing the bushfire attack risk to a level that was not going to compromise day to day functionality. The final design solution stretched the client’s expectations of what was possible, but it was clear that the boomerang shaped plan was a perfect response to both the site, climate and the brief.
