Goldfields Ruin

Situated in the rolling plains of the Victorian Goldfields, this original house has been left in ruin from the bushfires of 1977 to perish. Our clients loved the mystic of living in a ruin and hence a major challenge of this project was how to maintain this spirit whilst transforming it into a new house to facilitate a modern lifestyle. The resulting design floats a new roof above the old walls, a slither of glass separates the two so the roof effectively hovers over the walls. This separation allows the uneven contour of the top of the wall to be experienced from both inside and out. The new rear extension is essentially two triangular roof plains skewed to each other as if blown across the plains like leafs. The modern minimalist interior enhances the simple beauty of the masonry walls of the ruin.
